This graphic appeared in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, timed with the 50th anniversary of President Dwight D. Eisenhower signing the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 into law. The move paved the way for the federal interstate system.
Using Esri’s ArcGIS, I created a U.S. map for each decade that tracked the expansion of interstates within that decade. Supporting charts tracked the overall progress of the system, the longest interstates, states with the most lane miles of interstate and more.
